Young Horses

Preserving curiosity and the innate character of a foal or youngster whilst building his confidence is the prime focus of Arrans approach for a natural start.  Building a solid foundation for a youngster will allow him to confidently and willingly go on to do what his human may ask of him in the future.

Young Horse Starting

How the saddle, bridle and rider is presented to a horse for the first time will embed his perception of these experiences for the rest of his life.  Offering these experiences to him in a way he can understand helps build self-confidence and trust.

We start your horse over a 4 week period introducing the saddle, bridle and rider in stages.  We also cover the following to help prepare your horse for a variety of things that may be asked of him during his time with you;

  • Work from the ground
  • Helping your horse become polite during handling
  • Catching
  • Shoeing Preperation
  • Dental work preperation
  • Vet preperation
  • Trailer loading
  • Saddling
  • Introduction to the snaffle
  • Riding at all gaits
  • Riding outside / hacking out
  • Riding over obstacles

At the end of the 4 weeks we invite you on a 3 day clinic covering what we will have introduced to your horse to ensure when you both go home you have the confidence to continue with your progression and the start of a successful future together.  You'll be able to come and see how your horse is getting on any time during his/her time with us.

Take a look at our Lessons & Clinics page for clinic and module dates or for more information please contact us and we'll be happy to help with any queries you may have.

Foundation Training

Foundation training is what happens after your horse has been started, developing his confidence and exposing him to environments and experiences which he may encounter in the future.

Our Foundation Training module is a minimum of 6 weeks long and we encourage owners to spend as much time as possible with us.  For more information and prices please contact us and we'll be happy to help with any queries you may have.

Foal Handling

From day one your foal learns what he lives and lives what he learns.  We are able to help prepare your foal for basic vet treatment, daily handling and eventually for starting under saddle.  Our Foal Handling module is on a case by case basis so please feel free to contact us to discuss your foal handling requirements.
